April Foolishness - Insurance Nightmare

2016-04-01 08:30:00

Nobody truly knows the true origin of April Fools' Day. However, according to Urban Legends, the widest theory is that it dates back to 1582, the year France adopted the Gregorian Calendar, which switched the beginning of the year from what is now the end of March (around the time of the vernal equinox) to January 1st.

According to popular lore, some folks, out of ignorance, stubbornness, or both, continued to ring in the New Year on April first and were made the butt of jokes and pranks ("poissons d'avril," or "April Fish") on account of their "foolishness." This became an annual celebration which ultimately spread throughout Europe and other parts of the world.

Pranks are fun; I get it. As an insurance agent, I cringe when I hear dangerous stories like these…

  • College student pranks roommates and starts apartment on fire

  • Daughter plugs shower drain and floods bathroom pranking brother

  • Parents move kid’s car around the block, with keys inside and it’s stolen

  • Fraternity brother puts vaseline on car wipers and causes multiple accidents

Please think about the consequences before pulling any pranks. Keep safety as the number one objective. Focus on being harmless, friendly and lighthearted.  We all need a good laugh but don’t end up on Jimmy Kimmel because of it.

Happy April Fools Day!
